Therefore, any individual athlete or team that participates in competition is subject to the following athletic code of conduct requirements.
NOTE: Individual coaches may institute additional code of conduct requirements that exceed policy requirements through a written agreement between the athlete, parent, and the Athletic Director.
As an athlete, I understand that this is my responsibility to:

REGISTRATION, SPORT PHYSICALS and FEES
Registration
Arbiter is the registration platform whereby parents/guardians of student-athletes can find all the basic information and requirements needed to participate in athletics/activities while at Summit High School. Prior to the first official CHSAA practice, a parent/guardian will need to register their student for the desired sport or activity. This can be completed through the Arbiter link. Please note that registration for a specific season opens approximately two weeks prior to the start of that season. https://students.arbitersports.com/organizations/summit-high-school-2
Once you create an account on the Arbiter platform you will use that same account to register for an athletic/activity for the remainder of your attendance at Summit High School. VARSITY AND SUB VARSITY PROGRAM FOCUS:
Varsity Programs
The coach will field the most competitive and committed team available. Athletes who demonstrate a full commitment to the team and demonstrate exceptional ability will be put into competition. The expectation of our coaches and administration is that our teams are well-prepared, competitive and successful to include winning on the field of play.
Sub-Varsity Programs
These programs are focused towards the development of life skills and fundamentals necessary for participation on the varsity level. The coach of a Junior Varsity program will emphasize development of areas needing improvement on an individual and team basis. The coach will play as many athletes as possible.
If a program has a C-team, every athlete on the team will receive playing time (not necessarily equal playing time) in every competition assuming they have followed all requirements for eligibility and the coach deems the athlete fit to compete safely.
At no time will an athlete be permitted to participate in practice or competition if the safety of the individual and other participants is in question.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance Policy for Summit student-athletes/activity students
Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege, not a right. Students earn that privilege by being present in class.
Attendance in Class
All athletes are expected to demonstrate regular and punctual attendance at school.
Student-athletes who accumulate 10 unexcused classes will be suspended from participation in practice or competition(s) for three consecutive days after the 10th absence/missed class. The student is permitted to resume all participation after three consecutive days with no unexcused absences. Credit is given on the day of notification if the student does not have an additional unexcused absence. Individual counts reset with each new season.
Attendance Check Protocol
- Weekly attendance checks will occur on Wednesdays.
- Upon *discovery that a student-athlete has 7 unexcused absences, the student, parents and coach will be notified by the SHS Athletic Office.
- Upon discovery that a student has 10 or more unexcused absences, the suspension will begin immediately and the student-athlete is not eligible to participate on the day they are notified.
- Families are encouraged to track absences closely and and contact the SHS Attendance Office with specific attendance questions.
*If the student reaches 7 or more in the interim period between attendance cheeks, the Athletic Department will not be able to pre-notify.
NOTE: If the student-athlete accumulates their 10th unexcused absence prior to a school break, the student will have up to 3 PM to on the first day back to address unexcused absences. The Athletic Department is not responsible for notifications during a SSD break.
- Students must be in attendance for at least 2 classes (4 on Monday) of the day in order to participate in any school-sponsored event that day.
- Truancy may result in suspension from participation in practice or a game that same day and cannot be present during team activities.
- If an athlete is absent for any part of a day because of an illness, the athlete is not permitted to participate in athletics (practice or competition) on that day.
- Students may lose eligibility due to excessive tardies/absences of any type.
- Final decisions are at the discretion of the Athletic Director
Practice Attendance Requirements in season and out of season
- All athletes must attend regular in-season team practices within the CHSAA season dates.
- The athlete is responsible for notifying the coach of his/her reason for being absent from a practice session prior to the practice time. A minimum of 4 weeks notice is preferred.
- If an athlete is injured and attending school, he/she will be required to attend all practices and should be in continual contact with the team trainer and/or physician.
- If the Summit High School Head Athletic Trainer determines it is in the best interest of the athlete to remain separate from the team, exceptions will be granted.
- An athlete who has seen a doctor due to an injury, must provide a written medical clearance to return to practice.
- If an athlete has been suspended or removed from a team roster in one sport, he/she shall not be allowed to participate in another sport during that sport season.
- While in-season, student-athletes are NOT permitted to participate in voluntary off-season workouts in another sport without permission from both Head Coaches. This does not apply to weight training.
- No practices or contact of any nature are permitted on Sundays during the school year, or during the period from December 24 to December 27th and January 1. Practice includes any gathering of team members. Any scheduled practices from December 28th through December 31st are voluntary.
- Training/Sport Camps that occur outside of the mandated CHSAA in-season dates are voluntary and students will not be penalized if they cannot attend.
Voluntary Absence Policy
Voluntary absences from team activities are disruptive to educational based athletic/activity programs. A student-athlete who does not attend practice for any period of time is less prepared to compete safely and strategically.
Summit High School takes voluntary absences very seriously. Students wishing to voluntarily miss practices, games or activities should reassess their commitment to athletics or activities.
- Coaches are permitted to enforce penalties for athletes who are not fulfilling their commitment to their team.
- Coaches are permitted to implement maximum penalties of one day of required practice for every practice/competition missed before the athlete can participate in a competition upon return.
- If an athlete misses two or more practices immediately preceding a scheduled competition and for any reasons, regardless of when the athlete informed the coach, they will be ineligible for participation in a minimum of one competition.
- While suspended from competition, the athlete is permitted to be with the team during a home competition. Travel is not permitted.
A voluntary absence refers to travel during the CHSAA mandated season dates that conflict with a Summit High School practice or competition. The Head Coach and the Athletic Department will determine what is considered an acceptable absence from the team. Some examples of voluntary absences include:
- Family trips during CHSAA in-season dates
- Sport camps in any sport
- Recruiting functions
- Concerts, college/professional sporting events
- College visitations
- Elective appointments- haircuts, prom dress shopping, etc.
- Practices/competitions in other sports/teams/activities
- Any other absence the Head Coach deem to be avoidable
Participation in Multiple Sport/Activities in the Same Season
Athletes who desire to participate in more than one Summit High School sports or activities simultaneously must communicate in advance of the start of the season to the SHS Head Coach(es) their scheduling plans to include all anticipated conflicts.
Athletes who choose one sport over another on a particular day for practice, competition or any other team related activity will be held accountable by the team they choose NOT to participate with. Head Coaches are permitted to suspend an athlete for an upcoming competition under these circumstances. Attending part of each practice is better than only attending one team activity.
Athletes who participate on two SHS teams are required to pay the fee for each sport/activity.
Athletes who participate on a SHS team and a non-SHS team are subject to the same policy. Schedules must be coordinated with the SHS Head Coach prior to the start of the CHSAA season. Athletes are subject to game suspensions if they choose to attend non-SHS practices and competitions that conflict with a SHS practice/competition.
Coaches are encouraged to take the dual sport athlete’s multi sport commitments into consideration when selecting team Captains. SHS Captains should attend all competitions and practices in the sport they wish to serve as a Captain.
Five-Day Practice Rule
Before competing in an interscholastic contest or scrimmage, each competitor must have a minimum of five (5) days (excluding Sundays) of supervised practice in that sport. Football must have nine (9) days of supervised practice. Practice must be with the team -- not one coach and one athlete working out together.
If an athlete chooses to start playing football after participating in another fall sport in the same year, they are required to have a minimum of 9 practice days regardless of how many days they participated in another sport.
NOTE: Athletes in state playoff games completed less than five (5) days before the start of the next competitive season are exempted from this requirement.
P - Pre-Arranged Absence - Student fills out Pre-Arranged Absence Form that includes an academic plan and parent/teacher/student signatures submitted five days prior to absence with administrative approval-(Link Document)

Additionally, any activity that causes or requires a student to perform a task involving the violation of state or federal law, or Summit High School policies or regulations, is considered hazing.
We want to emphasize that no form of hazing will be tolerated, and it will result in disciplinary actions. Disciplinary action will be determined by SSD Administration, Coach, Athletic Department, or Superintendent.

If a student-athlete is injured or involved in an accident, the athlete will be evaluated by our Head Athletic Trainer. If the injury is serious the coach will call emergency services and the parent(s). All coaches are trained and tested on the Athletic Department Emergency Action Plans annually before the start of their season in the event of an injury or other emergency that requires their immediate action.
The parents will be contacted in the event of severe or significant injuries and consulted with in any decisions made in regard to treatment and rehabilitation. The athletic trainer will recommend doctors and/or treatments to care for the student, but the final treatment decision rests with the parents.
Coaches treat any acknowledged condition in the confidential manner with which the information is related by the parent or guardian. If an athlete misses practice on the request of a physician, the athlete should have a note of clearance from that same physician before returning to practice and the approval of the Head Athletic Trainer.
Concussion Protocol
1. Parents must provide the student’s counselor with a diagnosis of concussion
2. The counselor will communicate with teachers and school nurses via email any academic considerations that will be put into action and the timeline for them. (2 weeks - with potential extension dependent upon physician recommendations)

A second ejection during the season shall result in a two contest suspension. A third ejection will result in a review of the student's future eligibility by the CHSAA Commissioner.
If a student is ejected in the final contest of a season, he/she is ineligible for the first contest of the next sport in which he/she competes and completes the season. Players leaving the bench during a fight shall be ejected and ineligible for the next contest.
Athletic Transfer
Any students other than freshmen who are in their first year of attendance at Summit High School must apply for athletic eligibility through the CHSAA transfer process. Please contact the Summit High School Athletic Department for details on how to pursue approval of a transfer. In addition, please familiarize yourself with the transfer policy found on page 47 in the CHSAA By-Laws.
Transportation
All team members are expected to ride with the team to and from contests when transportation is provided.
If a student is not able to join the team prior to the game on the team's mode of transportation for that day, they must get approval from their parent/guardian, coaches, and the Athletics and Activities department prior to the date of travel.
Students may be released to their parents after an away contest with written consent to the coach. Students may be released to an adult other than parent or guardian only with prior written consent from their parent on a “Student Release Form” signed by their parent/guardian and athletic director prior to the game.
At no time are students permitted to travel with a student driver to or from a competition.
