SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT
Participation in athletics as a part of a school’s educational program is a privilege and not a right. Students wishing to participate are required to meet all the standards of personal behavior and academic performance of the school district.
At times athletes are held to a higher standard of conduct. In this regard, the Colorado High School Athletics Association (CHSAA) and Summit High School may exercise the fullest discretion permitted by law to uphold behavioral and academic expectations. Athletes in extracurricular activities must respect the schools’ ideals in matters of citizenship, conduct, and sportsmanship. Therefore, any individual athlete or team that participates in competition is subject to the following athletic code of conduct requirements.
NOTE: Individual coaches may institute additional code of conduct requirements that exceed policy requirements through a written agreement between the athlete, parent, and the Athletic Director.
As an athlete, I understand that this is my responsibility to:
- Place academic achievement as the highest priority.
- Show respect for teammates, opponents, officials and coaches.
- Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials.
- Exhibit fair play, sportsmanship and proper conduct on and off the playing field.
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness.
- Refrain from the use of profanity, vulgarity and other offensive language and gestures.
- Adhere to the established rules and standards of the game to be played.
- Respect all equipment and use it safely and appropriately.
- Refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal and non-prescriptive drugs.
- Know and follow all state and school eligibility policies
- Win with character, lose with dignity.
SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT
-
Setting the right example for young people by demonstrating sportsmanship and showing respect and common courtesy at all times to all athletes, team members, coaches, competitors, officials, parents, and all facilities.
-
Honoring the health and well-being of their child as well as their competitors.
-
Refraining from coaching their child and any other athlete from the stands or sidelines during training and competitions.
-
Understanding that criticizing, name-calling, use of abusive language or gestures directed toward coaches, officials, any athlete, volunteers, and/or any participant will not be tolerated.
-
Respecting the integrity of staff, coaches officials, including when at competitions, allowing them to focus on their athletes.
-
Treating staff, coaches, officials, and all athletes with respect and dignity.
REGISTRATION, SPORT PHYSICALS and FEES
Registration
Arbiter is our registration platform whereby parents/guardians of student-athletes can find all the basic information and requirements needed to participate in athletics/activities while at Summit High School. Prior to the first day of tryouts, a parent/guardian will need to register their student for the desired sport or activity. This can be completed at our Arbiter link (Arbiter Link). Please note that registration for a specific season opens approximately two weeks prior to the start of that season.
Once you create an account in the Arbiter platform you will use that same account to register for an athletic/activity for the remainder of your attendance at Summit High School
Sport Physicals
Students must have a current Sport Physical Form on file in the Athletic/Activities office or on your online Arbiter portal to participate. Sports physicals are available at the Summit High School Clinic or from your primary care provider.
No student will be permitted to participate on the first day of practice unless you have a current physical on file and are registered in the Arbiter platform.
*Starting in 2025-26, you must use the CHSAA PPE form
Participation Fees
Fees for each season will be collected 2-3 weeks into each season to ensure coaches/sponsors have the rosters finalized. An email notification will be sent to families when athletic fees are due. If financial assistance is required to assist with the payment of participation fees, please contact the Athletics and Activities Office. Scholarship applications are available on the Arbiter registration page or SHS Athletics website.
Summit HS Athletic and Activity Fee
Hockey- $500
All other athletic teams- $150 (per season)
Speech and Debate- $150
Fall and Spring Play- $70 ($140 if in both plays)
NOTE: Student-athletes who play more than one sport/activity in the same season or over multiple seasons in the same year are required to pay the fee for each sport/activity. E.g. A cross country, basketball and track athlete would pay a total of $450.
Athletic and Activity Fee Refund Policy
If a student is dropped from the team/production after the first competition for disciplinary reasons, no refunds will be considered.
After the conclusion of the season, all fees are final.
Accounts must be paid prior to the student’s graduation from Summit High School. Students will not receive their diploma at graduation until all remaining balances are paid.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance Policy for Summit student-athletes/activity students
Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege, not a right. Students earn that privilege by being present in class.
Student-athletes who are marked as unverified absence (U) or truant (C) in 20 classes will be suspended from participation in practice and competition(s) for three days after the 20th absence/missed class. The student is permitted to resume all participation after three days of attendance with no U or C’s.
After the first suspension, the student will be suspended for five days of participation if they receive an additional U or C. Any additional U or C’s after the five day suspension will result in removal from the team for the remainder of the season.
NOTE: Student-athletes begin each season (Fall, Winter, Spring) with zero absences.
Competition Days
Students must be in attendance for 50% of the school day in order to participate in any school-sponsored competition that is conducted on that day unless it is for a documented absence through the Dean’s office. They are permitted to practice.
NOTE: Students who miss any part of the day for illness are not eligible to participate in a practice or competition on that day.
How is the information on attendance communicated?
The parent/guardian and the Head Coach are informed by the Athletic Department when a student-athlete has reached 10 or more U or C’s. The parent/guardian can request updates at any time.

All coaches are trained and tested on the Athletic Department Emergency Action Plans annually before the start of their season in the event of an injury or other emergency that requires their immediate action.
The parents will be contacted in the event of severe or significant injuries and consulted with in any decisions made in regard to treatment and rehabilitation. The athletic trainer will recommend doctors and/or treatments to care for the student, but the final treatment decision rests with the parents.
Coaches treat any acknowledged condition in the confidential manner with which the information is related by the parent or guardian.
